Episode 469 – Pride Month Starts Today & Our Pride Is 24/7, 365!

This week on Gay Talk 2.0, the crew is back and already off the rails — because it’s June 1st, Pride Month has officially entered the chat, and apparently Jay is “in Puerto Rico” having board meetings at a bar while the rest of us are doing the responsible thing: recording chaos with microphones.

Nick kicks things off with a major update from the New Haven Pride Center, including the incredible success of Project Phoenix, the Pride launch press conference, elected officials showing up in support, and the emotional weight of saving a vital LGBTQ+ community resource. There are proclamations, gratitude, unsung heroes, and yes — feelings. Many, many feelings.

Then Tom welcomes a very special guest, Sabrina Owen, whose story becomes the heart of the episode. Sabrina shares how she uprooted her life and moved from the South to Connecticut to create a safer, more affirming life for her gay son. It’s funny, emotional, deeply human, and honestly the kind of parenting story that makes you want to hand out awards and tissues at the same time.

The conversation moves through Sabrina’s life in Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, her flight attendant days, empty-nest life, college transitions, and the very real work of raising an LGBTQ+ child in a world that still insists on making things harder than they need to be. There’s talk about safety, chosen family, dating, family denial, support systems, and the difference between simply “tolerating” someone and actually doing the work to love them fully.

Of course, because this is Gay Talk 2.0, the heartfelt moments come with side quests: metabolism betrayals, KitKats in the fridge, Mile High Club adjacent foolishness, a gay bestie with proper guest amenities, and the eternal question — what kind of gay doesn’t own a steamer?

The episode closes with Sabrina’s advice for parents trying to create affirming spaces, a conversation about breaking generational patterns, religion versus spirituality, affirming churches, Mama Kim’s Minute, an On This Day in Gay History honoring President Obama’s 2009 Pride Month proclamation, and a little Future Method butt-health business because balance, darling.
