The podcast hosts start the show with a fun game where they guess a few gay slang terms. The first one is “meerkat,” which means an anxious, sassy gay person. Then, they guess gay sex positions, which is a bit tricky, especially for positions like “Suspended Congress” and “Bumper Cars.” They have a great time with it and laugh a lot. After that, they switch to a funny game called “We listen and we don’t judge,” where each person shares a grievance about their co-host, and the others respond with the phrase. Finally, they talk about how hard it is for older people to use technology, especially iPads, and how challenging it is to teach them to use modern devices.
They reminisce about the lively gay bar scene in the 90s, mentioning famous spots like Choices, Escuelita, Crash, and the Limelight, Purgatory, Copa Cabana, and Roxy’s. These bars were like cultural hubs that brought people together and created a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. They talk about how gay spaces have changed over time and how they’ve shaped who we are. While they acknowledge progress and the presence of gay-friendly businesses, they also feel a bit sad about losing these special safe spaces. They think that the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ feelings might lead to more people going to gay bars again, because they’re looking for a sense of community and belonging.
The episode concluded with a brief history lesson about a controversial Newsweek cover story from 1990 about the future of gay America.
