GayTalk 2.0 – Episode 84 – Equality Australia Front & Center

Tonight’s episode features guest, Chris Entwistle. He chats with the cast to bring awareness to the current situation in the land down under, Australia. The government of this nation is currently in the middle of a two month-long survey asking the people if marriage equality should be approved. Such a survey which was sent out via mail has polarized the nation in where opponents of marriage equality are actively being vocal and at times nasty in the hopes of swaying others to oppose the measure. LGBT groups are actively working on the front lines to ensure the country see their efforts in a positive way by going door-to-door if necessary to educate others about marriage equality.

We pay tribute to Mathew Sheppard 19 years after his death. On October 7, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a then 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was brutally attacked and tied to a fence in a field outside of Laramie, Wyo. and left to die. On October 12, Matt succumbed to his wounds in a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. His death sparked outrage in our community forcing the federal government to act. On October 28, 2009, 11 years after his death, President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This act expanded existing United States federal hate crime law to apply to crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability, and dropped the prerequisite that the victim be engaging in a federally protected activity.
